-Addiction refers to a strong desire to do anything, even though it is regarded in a negative sense. The American Society of Addiction Medicine has defined addiction as “a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry.” The definition applies to sexual addiction also.
When you feel the compulsive need to masturbate, it is called masturbation addiction. The need seems to be so overwhelming to an addict that he or she loses control. This overwhelming need to get release sexually is often the foundation of any form of sexual addiction such as multiple affairs, sex with prostitutes, deviant sex acts, and even rapes.
Masturbation addiction is like other types of substance addictions such as those to alcohol or drugs. It is grouped as a process addiction or non-substance related addiction. In a process of addiction, the addict is compelled to indulge in acts such as overeating, over-working, gambling, having sex a lot, spending money frivolously, etc.
Now it may arise in your mind whether you are addicted to masturbation. You can go through a test to identify if you are addicted or not. Stop masturbating and having sex with any person except your spouse for a month. If you can continue on with this, then you are probably not addicted to masturbation. But if you find that you are barely able to continue on with this practice, then obviously you have a problem with addiction and as with all forms of addiction, you need treatment. As the masturbation addiction affects the body, mind, and also the spirit, you may need to get treatment for all these aspects.
